Things to consider when buying a sex toy

Sex may be a universal language but that doesn’t mean it’s not difficult to learn. Everyone’s body is different, and it can take time to learn the wonders of what it likes and dislikes.

Some of us neglect navigating our bodies when we are going solo and this can make it difficult to figure out what to do beyond using our trusted hand. If you've been thinking about getting a sex toy, here are a few things to consider when buying...

Is it easy to hold? There is nothing worse than getting cramp in your hand while you're trying to have a wank. This is also an important thing to consider if you experience anything like chronic pain or arthritis. We definitely recommend looking at the reviews when buying a toy as this is an issue that will most likely be mentioned if it’s the case. If you think this will be a problem for you, try looking for toys with a more rounded end or a figurative 'handle' of some kind which could be easier for some to grip or even cup in your hand rather than one that is straight all the way.

Too many buttons? There is also nothing worse than trying to cruise your way to orgasm with the slow and sensual increasing vibration settings to then find that they are all over the place and your mind is focussed on which button is which rather than the celebrity crush of your choosing.

If you are looking at vibrators, easy to use buttons is a definite must! Look for something that doesn't have too many so when you are busy throwing your head back into the pillow, you can easily just feel with your hand which button is which.

Batteries or chargeable? Toys that pack a punch need something to give them their power, so this might be something you would like to consider. Not in every case, but as a general rule, chargeable toys are more expensive than battery operated ones. This is probably because you are paying extra for the avoidant having to steal the remote control batteries when you've ran out. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I think this one definitely boils down to cost. Chargeable toys are a lot more convenient but are a bigger initial expense. Battery operated toys are usually cheaper but you could argue that depending on how much you use the toy, this option could work out to be more expensive in the long run. We'd recommend, if you're a newbie or won't frequently use the toy, get a battery operated one. If you know you will use it often or can afford to invest more, perhaps a chargeable one is your best bet.

Is the material safe? Sex toys come in a variety of different materials which again, usually comes down to cost. Some materials have been known to cause allergic reactions on sensitive skin and not all are compatible with every type of lubricant.

When it comes to material, it is definitely worth doing the research and being prepared to spend a little bit more money for a better quality toy.

Does size really matter? Luckily, there is no human being attached to this toy. Giving you the freedom to be as picky as you like without hurting anyone's feelings. Something that can be daunting for first-time toy buyers is the sizes and just how big some dildos can actually be. Figuring out what size (and yes, consider girth as well as length!) is so important because getting it wrong could shatter the experience. This is vital to consider if you experience any pain with something that is too big or you struggle to relax. Or alternatively, it is important to consider if you have tried and tested plenty of sizes and you are looking for something a bit more adventurous.

Is it budget friendly? So, I have mentioned cost a few times already and it is a given, especially with something like sex toys, that quality is incredibly important. However, if your budget is a lot smaller that doesn't mean you have to settle for a bad sex toy. Budgeting is about balance in this case. Be prepared to spend a bit more than you may have initially hoped (particularly if this is your first time buying) because the investment is usually worth it. But equally, look for some more affordable toys to begin with (they are 100% out there!) and opt for the one that is best accessible and safest for you. Also, in your search, get familiar with the prices so that next time, you know what to expect from the toy you want.

Happy shopping!
